What Hail Damage Actually Looks Like (It's Not What You Think)

Hail doesn't leave holes you can see from the ground. It bruises the mat under your shingles and strips the granules off, and both are invisible until you get up close.

If you're picturing hail damage as obvious holes or missing shingles, you're picturing wind damage. Hail is sneakier. It rarely tears anything off the roof. Instead it does two things that both shorten the roof's life, and neither one shows up from the ground.

The bruises you can't see

When a hailstone hits a shingle, it can bruise the fiberglass mat underneath without breaking the surface. The shingle looks fine from above, but the mat is dented and weakened. Over time, that weak spot cracks and lets water in. You find these bruises by feel, pressing the shingle for the soft, dented spots, not by sight.

This is why a ground-level look after a hailstorm tells you almost nothing. The roof can look perfect and be full of bruises that'll fail over the next year or two.

Granule loss

The rough, sandy coating on a shingle is the granule layer, and it's what protects the asphalt underneath from the sun. Hail knocks these granules loose. The shingle looks a little smoother maybe, but the real evidence is in the gutters. The loose granules wash down and collect there after the rain.

If you're checking your own roof after a storm, the gutters and downspout exits are the most honest place to look. A sudden load of dark, sandy granules in the gutters is a strong sign the shingles took a hit.

Why this matters for your claim

Insurance adjusters see a lot of roofs, and the damage that's invisible from the ground is the damage that's easy to miss, or to dispute. That's why we photograph every hail strike with a measuring tape in the frame for scale, and document the granule loss in the gutters. Clear, scaled photos of real damage are hard to argue with.

Not every hailstorm damages a roof, and not every damaged roof needs a full replacement. Sometimes the damage is on one slope. The point of a real inspection is to find out what's actually there, not to invent damage to create a job. If your roof is fine, the honest answer is that it's fine.
